Pool Plant Room Design & Installation

COMMERCIAL – DOMESTIC – REFURBISHMENT

Plant Rooms

Pipeline Leisure over the years are proud to have been involved in many pool plant room refurbishments and complete new installations. These projects have been for numerous type of clients ranging from domestic private individual owners through to commercial clients, such as hotels, leisure clubs and holiday parks. Each project with its own set of unique requirements that were to be taken into consideration before being carried out successfully. The criteria below is the process that we undertake to ensure a pool plant room is installed and commissioned which is both fit for purpose, efficient and meets the clients needs.

Design

Pool plant rooms store all the equipment that is necessary to control all the pools operations that ensure that it performs efficiently whilst in use. At this initial stage careful consideration is taken into account for the location, size, distribution and installation of the plant room. Our plant room layouts are drawn up in CAD to ensure everything contained within the space is positioned for the most efficient usage, running and maintenance of the plant room. Also adhering to PWTAG standards to ensure the correct turnover, filtration velocity and capacity is achieved  by the equipment being installed and commissioned within the plant room. This whole process is carried out in co-ordination with our architects , our specialist engineers and the client alike to ensure a smooth design stage happens and all are happy with the final design.

Location

Plant rooms should ideally be located in close proximity to the areas they serve in order to reduce service runs and system losses.
They should also be sized to give good access to the equipment that they house and allow for operation, maintenance, replacement and deliveries.
The location, size and distribution of the plant within the building needs to be considered early in the design process along with the operation and maintenance factors.

The plant room spaces should:

  • Allow the plant and equipment to be installed, commissioned, operated and maintained safely and efficiently
  • Allow for service access and removal/ replacement of all individual elements including bulky items such as filters, which may require extra wide access doors or removable panels.
  • Allow for the delivery and storage of chemicals in a separate, ventilated area, ideally at ground floor level. Include appropriate safety arrangements such as bund walls for chemical storage tanks and dosing equipment and emergency drencher and eye wash facilities. The acid and chlorine stores will require separate ventilation system.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation rates to all plant room areas also consider the need for similar systems for chlorine and carbon dioxide.
  • Ensure adequate floor drainage in the plant room and provide a hosepipe point.
  • Provide holding tanks if required for the main drainage system to deal with the quantity of filter backwashing water (can be separate from plant room)
  • Provide adequate space for a workbench, desk and chair, tools, maintenance manuals and so on.
  • Ensure flues, air intakes, ventilation and extract louvers/cowls are positioned away from public and residential areas.
  • Ensure safe access to all plant/equipment requiring regular inspection.
  • Be connected to all emergency alarms.

Size

A key consideration of the plant room is the size, this will depend on the size of the pool in question. However, making it as large as possible within the constraints of the location is always advisable for a number of reasons. This will firstly prevent any costly reconfigurations down the line when at the construction phase of the project. Also, a well designed plant room takes into account the need for adequate space to allow not just enough room for equipment, such as pumps and filters, but also space for chemical storage, electricity, drainage and control panels for an Air Handling Unit if required. Once installed, the plant room should be easily accessible for pool plant room operators to carry out the necessary daily tasks required in a safe and comfortable fashion. Due to the nature of the water and chemicals used in the day to day running of a pool, there should also be enough room to carry out maintenance and indeed repairs which is due to normal wear and tear attributed to the liquids/ chemical being used. Our aim is to future proof the plant room to ensure that this is the most cost effective construction for the client in the future given these necessary considerations.
